Microsoft and Yahoo In Talks Again

After Carl Icahn’ threat against the Yahoo board, Microsoft and Yahoo are back in talks.

It seems this time Microsoft will not seek to buy Yahoo outright, but will purchase part of the company. I don’t think the shareholders will like this.

Updates will be added as available.

UPDATE

It seems Microsoft is now looking to place its ads on Yahoo sites.  This would be a way for Microsoft to obtain access to the Yahoo “eyeballs” without buying the company itself.  Bloomberg is reporting here that Microsoft may have realized it would have been unable to successfully integrate with Yahoo and that this kind of a deal would obtain the benefit without the same cost.

If Microsoft was successful in this strategy, it would thwart Google’s attempted deal with Yahoo.  Why Microsoft wants to do this is beyond me as the software business is pretty good for them.  That same Bloomberg article points out that Microsoft’s current internet strategy is all over the place and that their branding is inconsistent and illogical.  So is Yahoo’s.

This is good money chasing after bad.
