Old Time Radio – Sherlock Holmes Series

It is common knowledge that Sherlock Holmes is one of the most portrayed characters in western plays and motion pictures.  Before television – radio was the king of home entertainment.  Every performance (or “work” in IP speak) that is placed into a fixed form is protected by copyright, which gives the owner rights (including to payment for performances) that he or she may exercise.  After a period of time – as set by the U.S. Congress in the United States – a work protected by copyright falls into the public domain.  Making this issue even more interesting is the fact that different countries have different periods for protection.  This means a work can fall into the public domain earlier in one country than in others.

A large number of the old time radio shows have indeed fallen into the public domain and since the Sherlock Holmes character is so popular a pretty good percentage of those shows are the adventures of Sherlock Holmes.  There are several sites that provide access to these old shows – all of them free for your entertainment.   Just don’t tell the RIAA.

Internet Archive

The internet archive is not just a place to find those website pages from not so long ago, it is also a place to find old Sherlock Holmes radio shows.  It has an extensive collection of the shows you can find by clicking here. Of course, you don’t have to click at all – the folks at the Internet Archive have provided the player below.  Just hit play.
