“Season of Disney” on Travel Channel
Every Friday through May 2, Travel Channel is featuring a travel special about Disney Parks. Starting on the 11th, they are all new specials with the theme “Season of Disney” and presented by Samantha Brown.
Samantha Brown’s travel shows have been a popular success for Travel Channel – and Disney is not an unfamiliar destination. Great Hotels, for which Brown serves as traveler, has visited Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Wilderness Lodge, and the Grand Californian. Those familiar with Disney know that each of these hotels feature spectacular lobbies and presidential rooms, which permitted Brown to showcase the Disney property lodgings. The locations also offered an opportunity to feature upscale Disney dining (as opposed to snacks in the parks).
The Travel Channel website lacks descriptions for all but one of the shows, but Samantha Brown’s Favorites does have a webpage listing 15 Disney Park attractions. The show will likely feature a segment on each one with Brown featuring the ride/show/restaurant. Something to note – the shows are not just about Disney World, but about Disney Parks. ( Recently, Disney advertising has featured the Parks versus Disneyland/Disney World, which is an interesting development in their marketing. ) In any event, even though the site lacks descriptions of the other shows, the title says it all. “On a Dime” – how to get the most value for the least investment. “Splurge!” – what a vacation can be if money is no object. “Royal Treatment” – special services that Disney offers while on a Disney vacation.
UPDATE – April 14. Travel Channel has updated its website to include descriptions of the “Season of Disney” shows.
“Disney Splurge!” will showcase the trips of three families and a couple as they celebrate special occasions with luxurious amenities, extravagant dining and exclusive venues.
“Disney on a Dime” will demonstrate how a trip to Disney World can be accomplished on a budget for the average family.
“Disney Royal Treatment” features two families and a couple “as their dreams come true in remarkable life-changing experiences. ”
Season of Disney: Samantha Brown’s Favorites airs Friday, April 11th at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
Season of Disney: On a Dime airs Friday, April 18th at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
Season of Disney: Splurge! airs Friday, April 25th at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
Season of Disney: Royal Treatment airs Friday, May 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
The Travel Channel Disney shows are entertaining, but are essentially well produced “showmercials.” Of course, if one enjoys the Disney resort experience, watching the shows is entertaining. When planning a Disney trip, the shows are invaluable, but, of course, feature some costly aspects of a Disney vacation without mentioning cost (remember, they are showmercials). It would be a fascinating study to determine the impact of the Travel Channel shows on park attendance. It must make a material difference, as the shows continue to be produced. I suspect that the production is independent of Disney, but that Disney Parks provide “over the top” cooperation for the crew while filming as well as making available a library of stock footage of the parks for use in the shows. Travel Channel can sell advertising to air the shows and Disney can benefit from repeat showings. A win-win “partnership.”
