MPAA and Sony Still Want to Control Your TV
Arstechnica reported that the outgoing “FCC chair nixes MPAA bid for selectable output control.“ But that hasn’t stopped the MPAA or Sony. Or maybe it was never really nixed.
Both entities continue to meet in ex parte meetings (that means behind closed doors without the opposition present) to convince the MPAA friendly Obama administration that selective output control is good for us. After all, they know what is best for all of us. With many of the MPAA and RIAA lawyers ending up in administration positions, we may be in for a loss of fair use rights.
The president of the “Sony Pictures Television” unit had this to say to the FCC:
“Mr. Mosko provided a brief overview of the television production and distribution operations of Sony Pictures Television in the broadcast, pay TV and digital markets in the U.S. He and Frances Seghers also discussed with Commissioner Copps the advantages of expanded consumer choices in the marketplace in support of the MPAA’s Petition for Waiver of the Prohibition on the Use of Selectable Output Controls (Petition) filed in the above docket.”
Outrageous. How misleading.
Make no mistake, by controlling your satellite or cable box (to ensure only DRM output is used) they will feel safe in charging you more ON a PER SHOWING/VIEW basis. This isn’t just pay for view for some, this is a first step to NEVER owning a movie to view over and over.
Everytime you buy a Sony product – remember some of the proceeds go toward Sony controlling the product you just purchased. I am waiting for the first Blu-ray that won’t run over component outputs. Just say NO to Sony.
