IFOEdit – How to Change Aspect Ratio Without Re-rendering

When recording from a HD receiver, the standard definition channels will sometimes appear stretched when recorded because the software and hardware does not recognize the 4:3 aspect ratio of the standard def programming.

Some DVD authoring software will not offer a function to revise the 16:9 aspect to 4:3.  Worse yet, who would want to re-render the entire recording.

IFOedit is a free program that will allow a user to modify the IFO file without modifying the actual video itself.

The interface is extremely simple, which will aid those who are new to DVD authoring.

First, don’t burn the DVD to disc.  Instead burn it to a folder set.  This will place the video files (VOB) and the information files (IFO) into a Video_TS (Video Title Set)folder.  IFOedit, naturally, edits the IFO files that contain Chapters, Subtitles, Audio and Aspect ratio information.

To remedy the incorrect aspect ratio, with IFOedit open the IFO file for the main movie.   This will usually be the VTS_01_0.ifo file.

Scroll down to the line that contains the video description for your video under the section entitled “Title Set (Movie) attributes:” and double-click on the line that has (16:9) in it.  See the figures below:

That will cause a dialog box to open and from there you can choose the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Save the changed IFO file, open your DVD authoring software and burn the disc from the modified folder set.
