Lawrence of Battlestar Galactica
Update: 6/13/2008
For those who want to know where Revelations took its dramatic moment, see this post.
Spoilers for those who have not seen the episode.
The uneasy alliance between the colonials led by Starbuck and the cylons led by “Natalie Six” exploded into violence. An unnamed Six kills Jean Barolay after the realization that Jean had killed the Six on New Caprica. Then when both parties are brought together to confront the murder, Natalie Six kills the offending Six to satisfy human justice.
Interestingly, this little scene (the only one with any drama or weight) is taken from one of the greatest films of all time – Lawrence of Arabia. In that movie (based on the autobiography of TE Lawrence) Lawrence is faced with a situation where the uneasy truce between two tribes with a blood feud is threatened by a murder. To defuse the conflict, Lawrence agrees to “do justice” and kill the murderer. Unknown to Lawrence it was a man he had risked his life to save in the desert. Lawrence keeps the peace and shoots the murderer.
The irony is that Natalie Six is in the role of Lawrence – the hero who led Arabs across the desert to attack Aqaba from a lightly defended land route. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see if Natalie Six does the same for the colonials against the cylons.
This episode was rather lame, but for the drama of the murder. Of course, the success of that can be attributed to the filmmakers for Lawrence of Arabia . . . not Battlestar Galactica.
